Voronov, General Nikolay

1899–1968

   Voronov was a Marshal of Artillery and member of the Stavka for the entire war. He played a major role in the reequipping of the artillery and in the development of its tactical application. During the Russo-Finnish War in 1939 he was able to use artillery to breach the Mannerheim Line. He also directed artillery on the Leningrad Front in 1941. His crowning achievement was probably the Stalingrad offensive of November 1942 which he planned with ZHUKOV and VASILIEVSKY, an offensive which opened with sustained pounding of the German position with 2000 of Voronov’s guns. He went on to plan the deployment of artillery and anti-aircraft guns at Kursk.
